The largest Female race in Sub-Saharan Africa
Once again, the bustling city of Lagos was abuzz with excitement as the 9th edition of the Lagos Women Run, the largest female race in sub-Saharan Africa, took center stage. This year’s race saw an impressive turnout of female athletes from across Nigeria and beyond, all sporting their signature pink jerseys and uniting in an empowering 10-kilometer journey through Lagos.
Taking place at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture & History, this year’s event brought designers, fashion enthusiasts, and industry leaders together to celebrate and elevate African fashion in ways that ripple through Nigerian society and beyond.
Lekan Fatodu, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), described the event as more than just a race. He affirms that the Lagos Women Run champions unity, peace, and the spirit of feminism while fostering a community of resilient women dedicated to making a positive impact on society. This year’s marathon, however, went beyond athletic achievement alone. In addition to the run, participants had the chance to engage in various entrepreneurship workshops, counseling sessions, and capacity-building programs, all aimed at inspiring and empowering women.
The Lagos Women Run further demonstrated the Lagos State government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that encourage active and productive citizen engagement. The event provided a space for women to build connections, support each other, and create networks that can help them uplift one another.
This year’s race crowned Joy Ebiye as the victor, marking her third consecutive win in the Lagos Women Run. She proudly took home the grand prize of 1.5 million naira, while the second-place winner received 1 million naira, and the third-place finisher earned 500,000 naira. Additionally, all participants received certificates and a variety of gifts, courtesy of the event’s generous sponsors.
The 2024 Lagos Women Run was undoubtedly a celebration of resilience, community, and the power of women. Lagosians and fans alike now look forward with excitement to the 2025 edition of this remarkable event, anticipating even greater participation and impact in the years to come.
